Arranging daffodils and tulips

  1. Daffodills ooze a slimy sap that is toxic to other flowers/foliage so trim to the right length and leave in water for 2-3 hours until the stem ends have sealed - then they can be mixed with other plants.

  2. Tulips continue to grow after arranging so place lower . TIP - to slow growth, wrap tightly in paper and store in a dark room.

  3. Spring foliage that you can pick from the garden is often woody, so snip the bottom of the stem to increase the uptake of water. WHAT TO PICK - architectural stems like Cornus for colour, Contorted Willow or Hazel, Forsythia, Exocorda the Bride,Viburnum, Grisellinia, Osmanthus, Pittisporum.

  4. To arrange in a vase, put the foliage in first, then the flowers, then the spikes. Think about where the vase will be positioned and the viewing angles.

  5. To arrange in a bowl, add chicken wired for support. Put the foliage in first to set the shape and cover the bowl, then add the interest over and above. Use darker foliage to add depth.
