The year started well, with the tulips and daffodils. However, my biennials weren't a great success and without a poly tunnel I have suffered with a lack of supply. In addition my anemones were probably dug up by the squirrels - I had planted masses, and the ranunculus which I'd planted in the greenhouse, then suffered from the heat and drought.
I turned 50 in May and had lots of lovely mini trips and a drinks party in the garden. The garden did look lovely and the weather was good. Hence I have been a little distracted and now need to turn my attention to planning as well as doing.
This week, I am hosting a charity garden party in aid of OPAL (Older People, Active Lives) so I have been working hard to make things look presentable - mainly trying to weed, edge and start cutting some hedges. I have staked the dahlias, some of which are romping away. Some haven't emerged yet but I am still hoping for new growth - and hopefully this will make the picking season more manageable.
So far my most successful seed sowings have been Nigella and Amaranthus. I have had virtually no success with cornflowers which is a shame. The Icelandic poppies are ok but I thought I'd have more blooms. The sweet peas and doing well, but the stems aren't too long - I must check the variety and get it right for next year.
My back constantly aches but I am managing!! The weather has been amazing and there is nothing better than working outside in the late evening.
